Saying Hard Things With Love

Recently, Elaine and Don came for a visit.  We enjoyed a good dinner together at our home.

After dinner the conversation turned to a heavy topic that Elaine brought up. Despite her ‘yes, buts’ in my speaking with her, I conveyed my deep concern regarding her outlook. After sharing my comments, Don and Connie verbally confirmed my concerns with her as well.

Sometimes sharing hard topics is very challenging, yet with a right heart motive we show love to others in doing so. If the purpose of the discussion is to truly help the person, comments are caring and “other-centered.” Regardless if one receives it or not, dialog motivated by love keeps one’s heart clear.

I had not anticipated having that conversation with Elaine that evening. It just came up. We must be “prayed up” in the event of such unexpected occasions. May God give us His grace as we courageously speak “love-motivated” truth to others.

About Our Dark Night of the Soul: Finding Solace Through Suffering

Our Dark Night of the Soul: Finding Solace Through Suffering shares the true story about a sudden family tragedy. As author of the book to be published in the summer of 2014, the true account tells of my sister being rear ended by a drunk driver. She barely survives the high speed crash being left to live as a quadriplegic. Written from a brother's perspective, the manuscript shares the heartfelt story of ongoing physical and emotional pain experienced by both victim and family. Only through God's grace can a family survive such a tragedy!
