Gratitude for Simple Pleasures

We visited Elaine today and brought her a favorite milkshake. She exclaimed as Connie and I entered the room of her gladness to see us as well as the chocolate milkshake. She drank the treat with gusto. With each slurp a little bit of joy encouraged her despite a throbbing pain level of 8 on a 10 point scale.

Simple pleasures are vital regardless of mobility. A change of scenery, favorite food, even people variety all help one to gain perspective. Just for a brief time, a different focus can enlighten our thinking with fresh, new vision.

As my sister continues to endure quadriplegic hardships with limited mobility, Elaine welcomes visitors as they bring their outside world to her. She asks them what is new and takes personal interest in their news. In that she momentarily puts aside her ongoing challenges to focus on others who take the time to visit her world.

Prayer: Remind us, Lord, to refresh ourselves with godly variety when the mundane overpowers our finite world view. Help us to use Your creation to refocus and regroup when feeling trapped and challenged by events beyond our control. In Jesus, name…Amen.

About Our Dark Night of the Soul: Finding Solace Through Suffering

Our Dark Night of the Soul: Finding Solace Through Suffering shares the true story about a sudden family tragedy. As author of the book to be published in the summer of 2014, the true account tells of my sister being rear ended by a drunk driver. She barely survives the high speed crash being left to live as a quadriplegic. Written from a brother's perspective, the manuscript shares the heartfelt story of ongoing physical and emotional pain experienced by both victim and family. Only through God's grace can a family survive such a tragedy!

One Response to Gratitude for Simple Pleasures

It’s 4:45 AM Sunday and I just read Brother Martin’s’ blog regarding his/Connie’s visit with Sister Elaine. The first thing I thought of when reading about the “milk shake” was as simple of a take-for-granted thing a milk shake can be to those who can pull over at will; at any time they choose to buy a shake but with Elaine she can’t! Totally dependent on those who LOVE (give of themselves) her which in a quadriplegic state she only knows love through little examples of love (others giving of themselves), this might explain why Sister Elaine in times past has questioned if those around her really love her. We, non-bedbound can say “I really enjoy milk shakes, I think I will pull over and show myself LOVE , today and buy myself something I really, really enjoy, a treat of LOVE (giving of myself) and I will show me how much I love me…

A quadriplegic must seek Elohim’s LOVE (the giving of Himself for us) then yet still, because we are soulish humans, a homebound person will watch the door to see if LOVE (give of themselves) is about to enter.
We can’t understand this totally unless we’ve “been there and done that” !

PS I just finished watching a Hebrew (Torah) teaching video on “LOVE” i.e. the giving of oneself.
We shouldn’t say “we know Elaine loves milkshakes” but instead say “we know Elaine see’s our true LOVE (giving of ourselves) when we bring her a favorite treat.”
